Module 1 Chapter 5 - Colour Circles (page 9)

Sample 1 - Stitched Colour Circle

It was interesting to sew a colour circle rather than paint one. This took quite alot of thread and took around 3 hours to sew. The dense stitching did pull the fabric in, and the end result was 'cone-shaped', but this doesn't show too much in the photograph.

Sample 2 - Mixing colours with threads

I have never tried this before, and this was the first time I have heard of using two threads through the needle, so I was keen to find out what would happen! The colours I achieved had quite mixed results...
The red & yellow combined well to produce orange
The red and blue combined quite well to produce purple
However, the yellow and blue didn't mix successfully at all when trying to make green. The blue completely dominates, even when viewed from a distance.
Maybe the effect would be different if using a different blue? Perhaps a lighter blue would work more effectively?

Sample 3 - Tonal Values with threads

This was also an interesting exercise! All of the colours combined well with white to produce tints (on the right hand side).
However, when black was mixed with each colour, the end results were more varied.
Purple, red, green and blue were quite successful, but yellow and orange were not so effective (they look quite mottled).
Perhaps this is more successful when using darker colours, as with sample 2?
